Located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, the coastal town of Kaikoura is the gateway to some of New Zealand’s best fishing.

Just two kilometres offshore from the town is a nutrient upwelling zone from a long oceanic trough, known as the Hikurangi Trench which extends down the east coastline of New Zealand. This easily accessible, nutrient rich area provides ample food for marine life to thrive.

Many deep water species can be found close to the shore, along with marine mammals such as whales, dolphin and seals. The area is also abundant in bird life, which includes Gannets, Buller’s Mollymawk, Royal and Wandering Albatross, a variety of Shearwaters, Petrels, Prions, Seagulls, Terns, Penguins, Oyster Catchers and Cormorants (Shags).

Kaikoura is known as the beautiful South Island's fishing capital, but there's so much more to do here. Visit Kaikoura and discover your own adventure!
